I was experiencing asthma for many years. I tried many home remedies, complimentary and alternate therapies and also many prescribed medicines. But my condition was not much relieved. Mostly I was advised that the best solution to avoid setting off of allergies is to evade contact with allergens that affect, which is practically not possible. But how can I avoid them as sadly we all are compelled to breathe in polluted air laden with allergens including but not limited to pollen, dust, smoke, dust mites, molds, mildew ,pet dander etc.
My friends suggested me to try home remedies like use of honey, black tea, cloves, ginger, massage with mustard oil, steam inhalation etc. Some advised for certain breathing exercises , yoga and massage, some recommended homoeopathic , traditional Chinese or herbal medicines. I joined a class of Buteyko and during some severe attacks went for acupuncture as well. But honestly, despite the money and time these therapies require , I didn’t benefit much.
A number of medical treatments are available to treat asthma and allergies. These include a daily pill called a leukotriene modifier that can ease both allergy and asthma symptoms. Immunotherapy and anti-immunoglobulin E (IgE) therapy help immune system to build up tolerance to the allergens. I was also on regular asthma medication for years. But gradually , I felt side effects, like of most medication. I put on weight because of my increased appetite and at the same time I felt stomach irritations. My blood pressure tends to increase and I was having mood swings.
I kept on looking for some treatment that is affordable and do not involve any time for use and has no side effects. Fortunately, one day a friend of mine talked about salt lamps. I surfed the web for salt lamps and instantly realized that what I had missed so far and regretted why I never owned them.I bought one from a local store and placed it on my bedside table. I liked the calming warm glow of natural Himalayan salt lamp that made me feel relaxed . After a few days I was feeling better and could notice that quality of air in my room has improved and it is feeling fresh and light. Now after a few weeks, I am quite relieved of usual symptoms like inflamed eyes, running nose, irritation in the throat and coughing. I am feeling energetic, vitalized and have a better concentration and memory. My sleep has improved and I wake up very fresh and happy.
To understand , how salt lamps ease allergies and asthma , we need to know what asthma causes in our bodies. Allergies and asthma usually take place together. The same substances that trigger allergies can also be a source of asthma signs and symptoms. Briefly, asthma is a lung ailment that inflames and constricts the airways, that carry oxygen to the lungs. This gives rise to typical symptoms including coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Allergies are only one of the factors that can set off asthma attacks. Not all people with asthma have allergies. Some health problems like obesity, sleep problems, acid reflux, stress etc can also trigger asthma. Colds and sinus infections can also aggravate asthma conditions.
Salt helps these respiratory conditions by drawing water into airways and improving the function of cilia, or small hairs that help move mucus out of the lungs.” (source– The Wall Street Journal). In addition, salt is antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial, thus help clearing infection. How salt lamps work is very simple. The bulb inside of the lamp heats the crystal and supports the ionizing effect. Salt is hygroscopic and can soak up water from the atmosphere. The mild heat of the lamp, evaporate the water and during the evaporation process the advantageous negative ions are formed to combat the excessive positive ions (bacteria, molds and allergens all carry a positive charge) by binding to them and neutralize the electronic smog. Once these airborne contaminants have been locked in the salt, clean water is re-released and thus it has a purifying effect on the air. Breathing this pure air, free of allergens help ease allergies and asthma.
Many studies reported that negative ions enhance mood, and improve breathing problems such as asthma. Interestingly, these studies use expensive negative ion producers not reasonable for producing everyday use. So Himalayan salt lamps are low-cost alternate giving same.
I suggest the readers to try salt lamps if having asthma and allergies but keep in mind that it may take a few weeks or months to work. Use it along with regular medicine and gradually get rid of medicines in consultation with your physician.
